THCA pre-rolls: price per gram vs rolling your own
Straight answer
Pre-rolls sell convenience by the gram. Here is what that convenience cost in public listings on Oct. 3, 2026, how pack size moves the price, and the five checks that tell you what is inside the cone.

THCA pre-rolls cost $1.50 to $16.00 per gram of flower in public listings from six online hemp sellers on Oct. 3, 2026, with a median of $7.50 a gram. Rolling your own from loose flower is cheaper almost every time: loose smalls, greenhouse and light-dep ran about $0.35 to $1.98 a gram the day before.

Pre-roll price per gram, Oct. 3, 2026
Flower-only pre-rolls (no kief, hash, diamonds or added terpenes). Per gram = listed price ÷ total grams of flower in the pack.
| Listing | Price | Flower in pack | Per gram |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 x 0.5 g, indoor | $8.00 | 0.5 g | $16.00 |
| 6 x 0.75 g, indoor | $46.00 | 4.5 g | $10.22 |
| 1 x 1 g, sungrown | $10.00 | 1 g | $10.00 |
| 7 x 0.5 g minis, indoor | $29.99 | 3.5 g | $8.57 |
| 25 x 0.5 g | $105.00 | 12.5 g | $8.40 |
| 2 x 1 g pouch | $15.00 | 2 g | $7.50 |
| 15 pouches of 2 x 1 g | $220.00 | 30 g | $7.33 |
| 80 x 0.5 g bulk bag, indoor | $210.00 | 40 g | $5.25 |
| 14 x 1 g slims | $50.99 | 14 g | $3.64 |
| 1 x 2 g | $7.00 | 2 g | $3.50 |
| 30 x 1 g | $45.00 | 30 g | $1.50 |
The sixth seller listed singles, 10-packs and 100-packs with no weight per roll anywhere on the page. A pre-roll with no stated weight cannot be priced per gram, so it is not in the table. Treat that as a check you can fail a listing on.
For comparison, loose flower in public listings on Oct. 2, 2026 ran $0.35 to $1.21 a gram for smalls, $0.66 to $1.98 for greenhouse and light-dep, and $1.10 to $2.87 for commercial indoor. The full bands are on our THCA flower price page.
Pack size moves the price more than the strain
Inside one seller’s line of 0.5 g pre-rolls, the price per gram fell at every step up:
| Pack | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 5 x 0.5 g | $24.00 | $9.60 |
| 10 x 0.5 g | $45.00 | $9.00 |
| 25 x 0.5 g | $105.00 | $8.40 |
| 80 x 0.5 g (bulk bag) | $210.00 | $5.25 |
Small rolls cost more per gram than big ones, too. Another seller charged $8.00 for a 0.5 g indoor single and $12.00 for a 1 g of the same strain: $16.00 a gram against $12.00. Each roll costs a seller roughly the same labor, cone and tube whatever it holds, so the half-gram carries more of that cost per gram.
Rolling your own: the arithmetic
Take 30 joints of 1 g each.
| Route | Flower cost | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-rolls at the $7.50 median | $225.00 | $7.50 |
| Pre-rolls at the cheapest 30-pack | $45.00 | $1.50 |
| Roll your own, greenhouse at $1.98 a gram (top of band) | $59.40 | $1.98 |
| Roll your own, smalls at $0.78 a gram (mid band) | $23.40 | $0.78 |
Add the price of cones or papers to the roll-your-own rows. Divide the pack price by the count to get your per-roll cost. A grinder and a cone filler are one-time costs.
Two things the table does not show. A $1.50-a-gram pre-roll is cheaper than rolling greenhouse flower, but you cannot see what is in it. And loose flower lets you check the buds, the smell and the stem before anything is ground up. With a pre-roll, the COA and the label are all you get.
What is inside the cone
| Label says | Usually means | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Whole flower, “no shake, no trim” | Ground buds only | Grade named (indoor, greenhouse, sungrown) and a lot code |
| Flower blend, house blend | Buds mixed with shake or trim, often several strains | Which strains, and whether the COA covers the blend |
| No fill statement | Anything, including trim | Ask before you buy |
| Kief, hash or diamond infused | Flower plus a concentrate | A COA for the finished pre-roll, not only the base flower |
| Terpene infused | Flower plus added terpenes for flavor | Whether the terpenes are cannabis-derived or botanical, as the seller states it |
Infused pre-rolls ran $5.00 to $20.67 a gram in the same Oct. 3 listings, overlapping most of the flower-only range. That does not make them a better deal or a worse one. Compare them on price per gram of total THC, using a COA for the finished product.
Five value checks before you buy
- Weight per roll is printed. 0.5 g, 0.75 g, 1 g and 2 g rolls all appear in the same category. No weight, no comparison.
- The fill is named. “Whole flower” is a claim you can hold a seller to. “Special blend” is not.
- The COA matches the pre-roll lot. Grinding and rolling happen after the flower was tested. A finished-product COA, or a lot code that ties the pre-rolls to a tested flower lot, is what you want.
- The test date is recent. Pre-rolls dry out faster than whole buds because ground flower has more surface. A test from many months ago says little about today’s pack.
- The packaging keeps air out. Single tubes or sealed pouches hold up better than a loose bag of 30.
The law: pre-rolls are flower, plus a few extra rules
As of Oct. 3, 2026, several states that allow some hemp products ban pre-rolls at retail outright. California’s AB 8 bans hemp flower, pre-rolls and other inhalables at retail from Jan. 1, 2026 (AB 8 text). Georgia’s SB 494 (2024) bars selling raw hemp flower and leaves, which takes plain flower pre-rolls with it; how far that reaches into infused products is still argued (Church Law summary). Louisiana’s Act 752 (2024) bans inhalable consumable hemp, pre-rolls included, at retail from Jan. 1, 2025 (MJBizDaily).
Federally, the hemp definition changes on Dec. 11, 2026 to count THCA toward the 0.3% total-THC limit, and finished hemp-derived cannabinoid products face a 0.4 mg total-THC cap per container (CRS IF13136; H.R. 6500, Sec. 2019). A pre-roll made from THCA flower fails both, so after that date it is not hemp unless Congress changes the law again.

Questions
- How much do THCA pre-rolls cost?
- In public listings from six online hemp sellers read on Oct. 3, 2026, flower-only THCA pre-rolls cost $1.50 to $16.00 per gram of flower, with a median of $7.50. A single 1 g pre-roll usually listed at $10 to $12. Bulk packs of 25 or more ran $1.50 to $8.40 a gram.
- Is it cheaper to roll your own THCA joints?
- Almost always. Loose THCA flower ran about $0.35 to $1.98 a gram for smalls, greenhouse and light-dep in public listings on Oct. 2, 2026. Even at the top of that range, a 1 g joint you roll costs about $2 of flower plus a cone or paper, against a $7.50 median per gram for pre-rolls.
- Are THCA pre-rolls made from shake?
- Some are. Labels such as 'whole flower' or 'no shake, no trim' tell you the seller claims buds only. 'Flower blend' or no fill statement at all can mean shake or trim. Ask the seller, and check that the COA is for the pre-roll lot, not just the flower it came from.
- Are infused THCA pre-rolls better value?
- Not on price per gram alone. Kief, hash or diamonds raise potency, so compare price per gram of total THC from a COA for the finished pre-roll. If the only COA is for the base flower, you cannot tell what the infusion added.
